5 simple steps to start SEO on your own!

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), in simple words, it means improving your unpaid search ranking on search engines like google or bing. When someone searches something relevant to your business then your brand presence should be there on the internet by which more organic traffic will be driven to your website and eventually it will turn into more leads and more sales for your business.

You will get hundreds of blogs out there on the internet explaining what is SEO? so I won't be focusing on that, rather than I will guide you on how you should start on your own and what things you should keep in mind while doing your SEO.

 

Now, SEO is not an overnight goal you can achieve by doing a few changes on your website. Well yeah, you can do that as well but as the time passes and Google crawls your content, there are chances that you may get penalized/banned for using Black hat techniques.

But, I suggest we always should focus on long-term goals and prepare a strategy based on those goals.

 

What things I should focus on while starting my SEO?

A few basic things which help you to rank good and build your authority on google are listed below:

 

1. List your business on GoogleMyBusiness :

First thing first, Google is the most used search engine at the moment so you should register your business on google business which hardly takes 10 minutes. Listing your business on google helps a lot when it comes to local SEO.

 

2. Create your website:

Your website is your identity when it comes to online marketing. Your website should be clean, simple and attractive. I would suggest trying Wordpress if you want to DIY. If you are not sure about what content you should add on your website, you can review websites of your competitors so that you will have an idea about what are the things you can add on your website which can drive more traffic. Also, you can always ask for help from experts.

 

3. Create your business page on various social media channels:

Create your company page on all the social media platforms which are used by your targeted audience. Following are the most used social media platforms which will help you to improve your visibility for search engines.

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter
  3. LinkedIn
  4. Instagram
  5. Pinterest
  6. Youtube
  7. WhatsApp business

When you are creating a page on the social media channels, keep in mind that your brand should be represented uniformly across all the platforms. So when your prospects visit any of your social media pages he shouldn't feel lost. Also, keeping it the same for all channels is easy for the search engine to identify your logo and the website.

 

4. Keyword research:

There are many free tools which will help you to do this research but I would suggest trying Google's webmaster tool or UberSuggest.

While doing your keyword research, you should always focus on three things.

  1. Relevance - Keyword should match your product/services features or the problems you are solving for your customer
  2. Search volume - How many impressions the keyword is getting per month or per day
  3. Competition - How many people are already ranking well for the keyword and how much efforts we would need to get there.

Once you are ready with the keyword list. Try Google trends to find out how the keyword has been performing on the internet since back from 2004.

 

5. Focus on your keyword and start publishing content:

Once you are ready with your keyword, you can start modifying your existing content or start creating a new content which will be related to the defined keywords.

The best way to improve your search rankings is by writing articles on the topic of the keyword and publish them on your website/social media channels. While writing the articles, the following things you should keep in mind to make it SEO friendly.

    Keep it simple:

    When you are writing the content to imrove your SEO, you may write it from the search engines perspective and you should not forget that people are the one who are gonna read it and share it with other people. So if you focus on the clarity and simplicity of the content, the chances are high that you will rank yourself well on the google.

  •  

    Do not spam keywords:

    Now you know that the search engine crawls your content's text-only and then it decides the relevance of the content to a specific keyword. So instead of spamming keywords in your content, try creating value around the keyword with the quality content which will eventually help you to rank higher. 

  •  

    Use URLs. Title tag, headings tag and meta description wisely:

     

    URL: Your website will automatically create an URL for your article but you should always check if the URL is simple to understand and has the keyword in it for better ranking.
    Title: The title of your blog/article should be compelling and should be given in such a way that the reader should feel this article is gonna help me solve my problems.
    Headings: There should be only one <h1> in the content so it becomes easy for search engines to understand what this particular article is about.
    Meta description: Search engine doesn't rank you based on this but it is always good to have an optimized meta description because that is what appears under the search of your keyword and helps users to click on your links.
    Alt-text: When you are adding images to your blogs, search engines won't be able to scan the images to identify what is shows and that is why you should always add alt text and description of the images so that search engine can understand what the images are all about.

Once you are ready with a few articles, create a plan and share that content on your website and on your social media pages to drive more traffic to your website and build authority on google so that google will trust your content and will rank you higher.

 

There are many things which matters while doing SEO. As I discussed in my article about digital marketing that there are 3 types of SEO which are as follows:

 

  • On-page SEO - What I have explained in Point 5 covers on-page SEO
  • Off-page SEO - Link Building, optimizing your website and internal linking
  • Technical SEO - sitemaps, meta tags, JavaScript indexing, linking, keyword research etc

 

What I have explained in this blog are very basic techniques which you can try yourself and see the results within 3-4 weeks. This might not rank you on the first page for high search volume keywords in a short period but if you want to try any long-tail specific keyword, I am sure the results will be incredible.
