What is content marketing?


When you hear the word content marketing, most probably you think of some blog post or some random post on social media. Aren't you?

Well, content marketing has been dominating the marketing game longer than the internet. You must be wondering how? Content marketing is more of a way of storytelling and the better you tell a story, the better you grab the attention of your audience.


If we go by the definition of the content marketing, then as per Content marketing institute it's something like


"a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action."


They have explained it quite well but if I have to simplify that I would say, content marketing is the process to share relevant and useful content to your targeted audience and help them to decide on their purchase. If your content is the most valuable and helpful to them then there are high chances that they would prefer your product/services over your competitors.


Why you should have a strong content strategy? 


If you have heard or read about Inbound marketing then you would know that content marketing is the pillar of Inbound marketing. If you are spending on digital marketing then you should seriously consider posting all types of contents on all the platforms which are suitable for your audience!

Following are the reasons why you should have a strong content strategy-


  • Helps you build trust in your audience.
  • Helps you build your brand
  • Helps you rank better on search engines
  • Helps you generate more inbound leads
  • Eventually helps you to drive more sales directly through your content

We always have been hearing the phrase "CONTENT IS THE KING" and just like every year, content marketers are gonna top the game in 2020 as well.

Content is there always it's just the method of consumption changes and in 2020 following are the trends which are changing the behaviour of the audience worldwide. 


  1. Podcasts:

    As per Podcastinsight, there are over 30 million episodes as of January 2020.The no's speak of themselves. More and more people are shifting towards it and consuming a great amount of content. Now is the right time to get on to it and start your podcast today to share the content over the internet.

  2. Short videos: 

    Videos have the highest engagement rates and people love to watch and share videos on social media. Also, if your video is short and on the point then there are higher chances that you would successfully leave a mark in the customer's mind. I would love to share some data related to video marketing which will help you understand how it is changing the game,

    • The average user spends 88% more time on a website with video (Forbes, 2018).

    • 85% of all internet users in the United States watched online video content monthly on any of their devices (Statista, 2018).

    • According to Optinmonster, video marketers get 66% more qualified leads per year (Optinmonster, 2019).

    • A survey conducted by Wyzowl shows that nearly eight out of every ten users have purchased a piece of software or app after having watched the brand’s video (Wyzowl, 2018).

    • In 2019, users spent a weekly average of six hours and 48 minutes watching online videos – a 59 % increase from just three years prior in 2016 (Limelight, 2019).


    Not just YouTube but TikTok has been growing its userbase tremendously and helping brands to reach to their potential customers with the help of short and creative videos.


  3. Memes

    Believe it or not but memes have been part of the viral marketing and brands have run successful campaigns to create awareness and increase engagement with the audience.


    As per Forbes article, this is not a trend but more than that.

  5. Infographics

    Infographics smartly sum up multiple things into one picture which gives clarity of the information and engages users to know more about the product/service.


    I tried creating this infographics for one of the blog post I have written on How to start SEO on your own? and it kinda summed up the whole article into one picture and that is the beauty of the infographics, they let you express more with less words.



    There are many other ways for content marketing and not limited to this but if you are starting on your own with a small team and want to boost your brand quickly then you can surely use the trend to build awareness.
